The Workaholic Trap
Before I became a part of the Strategic Coach community, I thought of myself as a typical entrepreneur: I was busy, I was disorganized, and I was a workaholic—I thought it came with the territory.
What I didn’t realize was how much my habits were impacting my life. I was working non-stop, and I knew my hours weren’t sustainable. It was putting pressure on every area of my life: my family, my downtime, and my team. I knew if I carried on at that pace, I’d burn out or compromise my health.
Up until that point, I’d also built my business in such a way that I was the face of the company. When we were working with key clients, they were insistent I be there to facilitate. My company had grown so much, it became incredibly overwhelming for me. I knew things needed to change but sometimes it takes an outside party to expand your mind in a fresh way.
Why Strategic Coach Is Worth 24 Hours Of Travel
I was hesitant to commit to joining Strategic Coach—traveling from Botswana to Toronto takes more than 24 hours and, with the time change, it’s exhausting.
Other entrepreneurs talk about how difficult it is to take time away from their businesses. But without Strategic Coach, my business wouldn’t be as successful as it is today. It’s how I stay motivated—and for the first time in my life, I’m learning how to relax.
I used to feel guilty about taking time for myself, but Strategic Coach introduced me to how important that is. As entrepreneurs, we’re fortunate that we have freedom over our time, and that’s something we need to take advantage of. As a rule, I’ve started taking every Thursday off, and my team is in charge of monitoring it. I’ve realized how critical it is to take time to pause and enjoy your life and to rejuvenate; I’m a better person because of it. I have more time with my family and see my friends more often without compromising my business growth.
Strategic Coach Is Changing Entrepreneurship
I’ve always found certain business norms to be misinformed, limiting, and claustrophobic. And coming to Strategic Coach was such a relief because it confirmed so many things I’d been thinking. I don’t like conventional thinking, which is reflected in my company logo of a man standing on his head. With Strategic Coach concepts that freely challenge conventional thinking methods in a very simplified manner, it felt like I was finally home.
It’s the reason I’ve reorganized my daily activities so I can focus solely on the areas of my business I’m most passionate about. This wasn’t easy either; it came with some tough restructuring and negotiations with my team to free up my time—a process that will still take time to fully entrench. But it opened up my world in terms of opportunities, and I’ve never been so clear on my purpose. In addition, my 10x growth plan is falling into place, my health and the quality of my relationships have improved, I’m taking more holidays every year, and I continue to be excited about my bigger future.
Entrepreneurs are different animals, and we have to learn what this means for our lives and our businesses. That is something I will always be committed to discovering for myself and for my team.
